Basic Concepts

What is a 'bookmark'?
A bookmark is simply a saved URL with a name. With TekTag, your bookmarks are saved on our server rather than on your PC. Saving them on our server has a number of advantages: you can access your bookmarks from anywhere, you can use them with any browser, and you can share them more easily with others.

What is a 'tag'?
A tag is a descriptive word or phrase you add to a bookmark. You can assign as many tags as you like to each bookmark. Tags are comma separated. For example, you might assign the tags 'consultant', 'Linux' and 'Red Hat' to the bookmarked home page of a new consultant you found. That way, when forget the name of the consultant, you can search the tags consultant, Linux, and Red Hat and find them again.

What is a 'type'?
TekTag also allows you to assign a type to a bookmark. The types are General, Fix, Tip, News, Bug, Security, and Distro. By assigning a type to a bookmark, you get more specific categorization. For example, you might have several bookmarks tagged with Dell and Linux, but if you are having a problem, you might only want to see those of types Tip and Fix, and not of types General or News. TekTag allows you to sort or search using types, making finding bookmarks faster and easier.

What is a 'topic'?
TekTag provides a way to navigate to bookmarks using topics. Topics are simply tags. The navigation topics are based on commonly used tags.

What is a 'rating'?
TekTag allows users to rate the bookmarks of others. This provides the obvious benefit of denoting the quality of a bookmark, as judged by you and your peers. Rating also allows the community to downgrade bookmarks thought to be spam. The rating system is:

  • Skull and Crossbones: Danger or Spam
  • One Triangle: Ugh! Poor
  • Two Triangles: Below Average
  • Three Triangles: Just Average
  • Four Triangles: Pretty Good
  • Five Triangles: Excellent!

TekTag is integrating ratings into its search, which will allow you to search for bookmarks that rate at or over a certain threshold.

What is Tip of the Day?
Tip of the Day is the highest-rated, most-viewed tip, as voted by the users. The Tip of the Day page will show the TOTD for each day so far that week. You can also navigate backward by week to see the top tips from weeks gone by.

What is the Tipline?
Tipline is a place where people can ask for help. Think of it as people seeking tips. Unlike forums, we encourage people to submit sites (blogs, forum posts, manuals) that answer or address the question. When a site is submitted that sufficiently answers the need, the original poster can close the issue, and a green checkbox appears.

Actions and Navigation

How can I copy someone else's bookmark?
Simply click on the Copy option for that bookmark. You can edit any of the descriptive information you like, as well as add a rating.

Can I e-mail bookmarks?
Yes, you can e-mail to one or more users via the e-mail option for that bookmark.

Advanced

What is an RSS feed and how do I use one?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing Web content. TekTag uses RSS to provide feeds of various content, whether a feed of all bookmarks, a feed of your bookmarks, or a feed for a specific tag or topic. Feeds are designated by the icon and followed by a description. To access a feed from TekTag, you simply point an RSS reader at the URL of the feed you are interested in.

What is a 'watchlist'?
A watchlist is a list of users whose tags you would like to "watch." For example, if you have a friend whose bookmarks you would like to see, you can add your friend to your watchlist. Or, if there is a particular TekTag user who is an expert in an area, you might want to put them on your watchlist. All bookmarks that are public will be available to you.
